Last night I stayed up to 2:30am scheduling the boy's english, latin, and spelling. I used Donna's one subject planners in MSword. My hope is to copy and paste these onto the weekly schedules.

At 2:00am I thought I was getting my second wind, so I decided to make bookmarkers for the first two lessons of spelling. At 2:30am I thought they looked really great. Nice and big for a fifth grader. Now that I have had some sleep, I can see that they are REALLY huge and I forgot to put the lesson number on there. laugh.gif laugh.gif Good thing I only did two.

I am so excited to have this done. Now I have to do history, math, and the study of The Twenty-One Balloons book. Actually the book is almost done on paper, just need to type it up. Science I will probably just write out every other week or so.

Next I have to schedule my daughter's stuff. I have already done the LLATL and that one is the hardest. History and Science will be about the same as the boy's.

For Art I bought Art with A Purpose by Myron and Rachel Weaver. That will be easy to write out on just the weekly. One lesson per week clap.gif . Last year we did the lessons on Donna's site, but I think dd#1 was a little young for it. The boy needs to do something for this year, but I don't know what. He really needs help biggrin.gif .

Now I have to go to the Computer forum and ask how to make bookmarkers on landscape thinking.gif .

How are you doing on the scheduling.
JanetP
We have our plans in place for our Olympics study. That will take us through the next few weeks. We also have reading and science figured out for a while. I need to look at the math books again. Since we use a program designed for classrooms that tends to be the subject that needs the most prep work. I do like to have a couple of weeks worth ready at a time.

We will know our "official" start date next week. Although we've been started for some time, we will "start" the same day the girl across the street starts Kindergarten. There are so many K's in our district that they start them on 2 different days.

I guess I've done more than it feels like. smile.gif
Michelle
I am doing well with my planning...have all 4 kids math, science, some english, music, computer, done. At least about 6 weeks worth done. I have the over all done though.

I am wondering though...when it comes time to schedule the actual days, if I will find I have more happening than there is time to do them? lmfao.gif

I still have several more to do yet, which I hope to finish today or tomorrow...then take a couple days for all the worksheets etc needed during that time frame, and file them.

THEN I should be able to keep up with it. Every week just add to my schedule and files of supporting material.

Donna
clap.gif That's great that you have gotten so much done!!

We've already started school but I still have to plan my daughter's history and health
Appliejuice
I am glad I had scheduled out my son's English, Spelling and Latin last night. This morning I got out his book The Twenty-One Balloons (Total Language Plus), and found that it would be way to much for him to do while doing spelling, latin and english. I have decided to wait until we are done with the English and Latin. If we keep on schedule, my son's should finish these two about six weeks before end of school. Which will be a perfect time to do the book; it is a five week study.

I wonder this also, but I want to make sure the kids are busy biggrin.gif .

I got out our history SOTW thinking.gif , I just hope we can make it to Greece. I think we will just do some reading and some coloring of pages and map work, leave everything else out. Then we will do more for Ancient Greece. I bought the History Pockets for it happy.gif . Now I am trying to decide if I want to do two day or three days for history. I would like to do science three days a week. Seem like there is not enough time to do both. How do you schedule your history and science?

Very poorly ... I hardly have any of it done yet ... At least I have everything purchased ... I think stunned.gif
Guess I better get going. We will start school on the 25th or 26th as we will have some late summer guests. This is when ps starts and we usually follow that schedule.

In looking at what I have for my daughter to do I don't really have a whole lot of planning, English is planned out, just do one lesson a day, math - same, spelling - same, history - same, vocabulary - same. I have several science and geography unit studies already planned, just need to figure out when to do them and a little refining and I'm done.
Guess I have more ready than I thought! And I know I have way more than we could ever get done planned!!!

I bought Mystery Of History for this year and I think it is similar in format to SOTW. We will either do 1 hour each of science and history everyday or 2 hours of one every other day. 1st week M W F science, T Th history; 2nd week M W F history, T Th science; and so on alternating weeks. I will probably do the 2 hr block schedule.

Clear as mud?

I'm having to do a bit of tweaking to the schedule that I finished out the end of July. Things happened this week and I realized that I was having us do more than we could do a day. So I'm reworking and scheduling a day to catchup each week. It will probably be Fridays as that's the day we go to the library and may also have coop day then as well.

Still playing things by ear. rolleyes.gif

Ya know, Carey, this is a pretty good idea. It never occurred to me to flip flop on a weekly basis (I am biting my tongue hard not to verbalize the obvious political joke here) rolleyes.gif
My boys do better w/shorter lessons, but we like to get into science a bit more. This would allow for the extra time in one subject while not getting behind in the other. THANKS!
Michelle
While we are doing our lesson scheduling, is anyone also planning the chores, or updating our personal planner books, with financial sheets, menus, etc? I want to ... I love starting the new year out fresh.
Donna
I need to. When I got my new computer, I started using Outlook for my planner, but then I noticed that I was less likely to check it. Of course when I lost my data, I lost Outlook data too. I'm going to go back to using my half-sized planner, it sits on my desk anyway and before, I seemed to always manage to keep it up.
Appliejuice
I usually update my planner just after Christmas. My school planner is different, it is updated in June or July. I am currently working on chores, which is not fun. I really need to do menus. That is one tough area for me. My kids do not like what I fix. user posted image.

I use the half size planners, some are from Donna. I kept my planner book on the computers bookshelf, but would not keep up with it. Two weeks ago I went to Target and bought a red (I like red ya know biggrin.gif ) cookbook stand. My planner fits perfectly in it and is now open to the month on the counter.
Michelle
I like the stand idea! Maybe I would use mine more if I did this. ... hmmm ... now where is a spot that I can put a stand ...

WE are going to start in math and hit that pretty hard this week. and throw in the other subjects here and there. we don't have a set schedule, my son's seems to work better like this. rolleyes.gif

user posted image for this motivating conversation. I actually planned out the next 8 weeks of our ancient Rome study w/SOTW last night. I think that's pretty much all I have left to plan out for now. Grammar, Math, Spelling, and Handwriting sort of schedule themselves (one lesson/day until done!)

For the past five years, I have only given a monthly account of what we have done. This year I want to make a daily schedule. Right now I am working on scheduling Rod and Staff math, grade two. I am using Donna's Quarterly Planner. smile.gif

My daughter does not have a text book, only a workbook. All teaching if from the teacher's manual. My question is how do I write this down on the planner? Do I write in the page numbers for the teacher's manual or just the pages to be done for the workbooks?

For my son, grade six, (I did this last year for grade five), I wrote the page number from his textbook, plus any speed sheets and extra work. My daughter only has a workbook.

I am wondering if I will confuse myself writing page numbers down from the teacher's manual. dunno.gif

Oh never mind! I am doing this for myself and I will need to know what pages to look at in the Teacher's Manual. I think I will write TM - page 2, WB - page 7, Speed Drill 1, etc.

Gee, I just make this job difficult and it really isn't. Must be why I don't get it done. blush.gif

I am a planner! This is a good question.

I have a grid like fashion with the days of the week across the top and subjects across the left side. On the right is some free space. I fill in the associated page numbers and any other pertinent information. When we start a new book, read a library book, or if a child needs additional help, I write it in the free space on the right side.

This enables me to keep track of everything, on one sheet, per child. When I go back to write my end of the year, everything is there. It makes it so simple for me.

Did this make sense?
Nana
Sammi, I do domething similar weekly

I put assignments in for each subject for the week and the kids go down and complete each day's work... then if they feel like going farther they work on the next day.. and so on if they finish all week's work by say Wednesday.. we plan a fun thing or they can start next weeks work...

If we do not finishe I re do and start where they left off...then Keep the original and the final in a notebook
chocolatelover
I have already started plans for this coming year we will be starting next month. clap.gif
I wrote in our plans TMpxxx WBpxxx under the subject. I also used Donna Curiculum Key ... so I have as an example for English ... E3: TMp1-3 WBp1-2
It might not make sense to anyone else whistling.gif but as long as I know what the heck am talking about that is all that matters. We don't have to show anything here in AZ, so all records are for my own peace of mind.happy.gif

I finished two quarters of math last night. These sheets will go into my teacher's log. The weekly ones will be placed in the child's portfolio as we go along. smile.gif

Hey out there smile.gif

Does anyone know of a daily planner out there?

I have found that some weeks it is just too complicated or difficult for me to plan a week or more at a time. also, right now, we are studying 6 days a week. It seems to be better for her to work for a shorter amount of time daily for more days. lol.

I have found several good weekly planners but I prefer to have a whole page devoted to one day so I can go into more detail for her.

T hanks in advance for the help! smile.gif

Hi Kelli, Donna has several nice planners on her website. I use many of her forms. You will find planners for columns, one subject, weekly, monthly, quarter planners and more. Let us know if this is what you are looking for. flower3.gif
school2
I use Donna's forms to plan but I never got organized enough to print everything out and have it ready for me for the daily, contemporaneous schedule FL requires.

I use the Homeschool Teacher's Plan Book by McGraw Hill. You can buy it at Rock Solid it's about $6-7 dollars but for me it is nice to have this in one place...since my planning stuff is all over the place bonk.gif I bought one for each of my girls...I'm trying to get my oldest to write down herself what she does each day and then I just check her log.

I write in pencil and some days I just write in what we did as we do it, sometimes I plan a few days ahead and then adjust accordingly to what we actually did whistling.gif

I started this year with a sketchy plan so this has worked well for me.

I use Donna's forms for long range and curriculum planning. This week I used her weekly form to plan a week ahead. I don't want to write this in the log until I see how it goes...the best laid plans ...

I just reread your post...the planner I use doesn't dedicate a whole page to a day it is almost identical to Donna's two page weekly planner.

Donna has journal pages that might work well for what you are looking for or you could just date pages on a spiral bound notebook and use a page for each day.
wyntersong
I did find many great forms on Donna's site, but not really what i am looking for.

Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place though. I want one sheet for each day, with a column for subject, a column for pages or lessons to be done and a column for notes.

D o you think she has one like that? help2.gif

I am not new to homeschooling, but I am new at trying to organize it whistling.gif
school2
I haven't seen anything like that but maybe if you could make this in Microsoft word choosing the table icon and make a page with three columns dunno.gif
wyntersong
That is a good idea. of course, as soon as i make one, I will try to use it and realize that there is a reason no one else has one. lol

L ike you, I use pencil and mainly write it down as we do it. smile.gif

But I am trying hard to be more organized in everything (household and homeschool), now that I am starting to homeschool two. it seems i spend most of the day just trying to find things and remember what we did yesterday. blush.gif

My name is Christie, I am from Georgia. I have two daughters. One is 12 and the other is 14. This is my first time homeschooling. I have a few questions but the main one for now is what is the best curriculum? I have been looking at Abeka... then I found another one that I may be interested in... "Core Curriculum of America." Can anyone give me any info on those... What is your opinion on them? I like that the Core Curriculum gives you customized packages for each individual.
Help & Thanks! help2.gif
Again
I don't use either ... I just wanted to say Hi from another Georgian!! flower3.gif

We are following The Well Trained Mind ... and we love it. It is not a prepackaged thing ... you just find what works and plug it into their outline. I like the freedom.

There is someone here who has been using Abeka ... maybe she'll jump in and give you her experience. You'll find though that as you learn how your kids learn that your choices will change. Don't put all your stock in just one thing ... it may not be a good fit. Try something and if it doesn't work ... trust me, you'll change it. I have gone from being a total "unschooler" to classical education nut! You just never know what will work. ... and that is half the fun. whistling.gif rolleyes.gif
quiltinmommy
What a loaded question! The truth of it is there is no perfect curriculum, everyone has an opinion. Abeka is a good curriculum, my only hesitation with starting it with 12 and 14 year olds is that it's an advanced curriculum... it may be ahead of your girls. I found it difficult to jump into a curriculum like this...we tried Calvert, my daughter was not ready at the time.

I've heard of Core Curriculum of America but I don't know much about it.

I am very eclectic in my style ... we use a little bit of this and a little bit of that. If I was going for a box curriculum, I would look at Hewitt (I love their resources for older kids!!!), Bob Jones (also an advanced curriculum), Sycamore Tree or Sonlight. If you would like to mix and match, I can also point you to resources. My kids are similar in age, I have 8, 11 and 13 (grades 2,5,8).

Good luck!
HomeschoolLady03
I have used A Beka for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and now 5th grades. We absolutely love it. yes.gif

It is advanced, as compared to what *our* local public schools are doing. (My sis is student teaching in 5th grade at our public school.)

It is a Christian curriculum. I do not go by the curriculum guides. I do all my own planning and so forth. (I may change that dunno.gif )

A Beka is either a "love it" or "hate it" sort of thing for most people. Some people love the structure, while others hate it.

I will say that I also use other things to supplement A Beka. I supplement in writing and reading.

Good luck in your decision. flower3.gif
jessicasmom
I have used Sycamore Tree for the past 2 years because if you buy their complete curriculum package you get the lesson plans which have helped me as a fairly new homeschooler.

Hello and welcome! We only use A Beka for math and we will not be using it next year. I think we will be going with Saxon next year for math, just not sure yet.

I have heard lots of good things about A Beka, but we have not been impressed. I, too, have heard it is advanced, but we used the same stuff our public schools used last year for math and we had no problems starting right up this year. (Well, no problems with the math part ... starting up, that was another thing! wreck.gif ) Of course, my girls are doing 2nd and 3rd grade math and that could have a lot to do with it.

I wish I could answer your other question, but I have not heard anything about it until now. Good luck! In the end, I am sure it will all work out! yes.gif
Nana
flower3.gif

My kids are younger than yours but I am using:

Saxon for Math

Zaner-Bloser for Spelling and handwriting,

CLE for Reading (for now)

Science is anything I find for it; as I have not found one I like yet..

Social Studies we are doing a unit type thing and studying the US state by State and making a notebook/scrapbook for them. My husband travels so he gets postcards from the states he visits and maps and other things.

Music is whatever we listen to a lot of classical

and

Art we do a lot of arts and craft type things at this time ...

I hope this helps, just wanted to let you know you do not have to like all of any curriculum... Use what best fits YOUR children.

Good Luck and Welcome.

We are still learning. We don't use a curriculum per say. We are still looking for a good fit for us. Just keep looking and researching and experimenting until you find what is right for you.
mom-to-five
well I have to agree with whoever said that abeka seems to be a hate it or love it curriculum!!! We do not like it but , then again we are not go completely by the book kind of learners!!!

It may take some time before you figure out what works best... I know it did for us!! We us Saxon and Singapore for math ( different math for different kids), Apologia for science for everyone this year, all though we have used Sonlight for science before and liked it a lot as well. Let me see, Easy Grammar, Streams of Civilization for history, and Story of the World ( again, different stuff for different kids) I think that is what I like best about homeschooling is I can use what ever works for each of my kids.

I hope all goes well in your first year and welcome to our group!! flower3.gif
gsmp
I use Abeka with a mix of Bob Jones, Saxon Math and Spelling Power.

I like the Abeka program but it can be overwhelming. There is a lot of work to do and it is very repetitive. I supplement with Bob Jones reading because it forces them to think and reason out the story.

I have an 11 year old daughter who is in the 7th grade. She needed a reading that would make her question.

Overall curriculum choice is going to be what works for you. There are a lot of good programs out there but it depends on what you are expecting from yourself and your kids.

The first year is always the hardest ... so I've been told. blush.gif . We are going into our second year.

Ask away though ... this is definitely the place to be ...
cm_dean
See, I am so confused since this is the first time that I have ever done homeschooling and being as there are so many options I don't have a clue other than to order a complete curriculum. Even though what I have heard from the replies here. I had no clue that you could order from different places. This is really confusing. I read that " Core Curriculum of America" offers the lesson plans and many extras. Plus it's not near as costly as A Beka... Is it better to be hands on with your children or is it better to let them learn from a dvd?
Thanks so much for your help!

Christie wall4.gif
Again
I think whether you are hands on with your kids or not depends on your kids ... can you count on them doing the work assigned with minimal brow beating? yes.gif Or would they require you to be constantly looking over their shoulder and guiding them?user posted image

I think what most of us have done is to finally just pick something and run with it...you will know pretty quickly whether it is a good fit or not. And if it isn't ... you may not have to change the whole curriculum (expensive), but just some aspects of it. There is no law about changing things to suit your particular situation. You will not ruin your kids for ever! If nothing else you will be learning a lot together about so much more than history dates and scientific formulas. clap.gif

By the end of this year you will be a pro ... .I know you will! You love your kids more than any teacher, etc. and so you will do your best for them. Maybe let them see what a struggle it is to do this for you ... they may appreciate it more and help make some of the decisions ... if they seem ready for that.

Maybe you should figure out what your goals are for the kids this year. Write out the courses and the goals that you would like to accomplish ... that may be a good starting point.

Ask more questions here ... we have nothing to do all day! Oooops! I mean we are schooling and love to help ... whistling.gif Phew! almost gave away my Forum addiction! roflol.gif roflol.gif

The ladies out here are so awesome you can't go wrong by the advice and suggestions.

You have to remember that it boils down to what you are also comfortable with doing.

I went with Abeka our first year because the kids were all ready used to it and I was familiar with it. They came from a Christian school to homeschooling.

When we went to our first Homeschool convention last year ... My husband was so overwhelmed ... he couldn't believe the options that are out there.

I chose to go with a curriculum that offered the lessons plans spelled out for me. I needed that to start out with and still do. It gives a guide to follow.

Another option is to get a copy of your states scope and sequence (what they require you to cover for those grades) . This will also be of some benefit and help you see which way you are going.

Some of the Christian Curriculums are ahead of the public school so you may want to find one that will do placement testing for you. I know that 90% of the curricula do offer these. A lot of times this is offered free if you choose a particular group or there is a small fee.

Don't drive yourself nuts trying to figure all this out in one short time. I have friends that have tried something and it not work for them ... they had the luxury of ordering a replacement curricula Others have just thrown away the lesson plans and made up their own thing as they went along.

You've gotten a lot of really good advice from the ladies here like Pam and quiltinmommy ... not meaning to leave anyone else out blush.gif . They're all great ideas ... Once you get started ... it won't seem so bad ... the choosing is the worst I think ... whistling.gif

This is my 2nd year of homeschooling and I'll be honest, we spent just as much time switching curriculums as actually studying last year. And my dc were 4th, 6th, and 8th grades last year. Just remember to give yourself time, and I agree that you are not going to mess them up. I'd have to say that even though our academic year wasn't the greatest, my dc matured TREMENDOUSLY!!

I have a great curriculum this year and the dc are loving school and doing well. We are very eclectic. I use Christian Liberty Academy Christian Liberty Academy for my oldest in high school because she wants the transcripts, etc. They are also very flexible.

Anyway, the ladies here have given you wonderful advice, but it boils down to what works best for you. And again, it takes time and trial to find this out.
lm4jc
Hello from yet another Georgian! I just joined this forum but I thought I'd post right away. The other posters are correct - there is no perfect curriculum. You will probably find that you will change your mind several time over the years before finding what really works for you. Some of what you need to decide is how your children learn best, and what goals in the format of your schooling you have. I'll give you some example:
--do you want your children to work primarily independently with little actual teaching from you?
--do you want to teach them together for some subjects?
--do you want to do projects and hands on activities as the primary learning method?
--do your children prefer workbooks or textbooks or unit studies or video ... ?
--do you want to have everything pre-planned or do you prefer to formulate your own lesson plans?
--will you use textbooks for literature and history or "living books"?

You get the idea. There are so many things to consider before choosing a curriculum. I homeschool all of our 8 children and so we strive for independence in a big way. I want my kids to understand that life will not spoon-feed them information and they will have to teach themselves what they want to learn. But I also have some struggling learners that require more specialized curriculum materials suited to low-ability readers. We don't do many hands-on projects or activities simply because it takes us most of the day to do the basic stuff.

Overall, I have found some materials that I like better than others.
--Climbing to Good English (A complete workbook style English for grades 1-8. Used in the Amish schools. Not colorful or fancy but very comprehensive. Lots of writing. You would need a separate spelling program. These workbooks are very inexpensive. If you choose these expect to be gin at a lower grade level than what your kids are in.)
--Apologia Sciences (www.highschoolscience.com)
--Teaching Textbooks Math (www.teachingtextbooks.com. Expensive but VERY worth it!)

I'm so excited! The Christian Liberty package came today. Because my daughter is sweating getting into college (she's going to be in the 9th grade in the fall) user posted image, I signed her up for Christian Liberty Academy at our convention. We got our intro package with our planner and "stuff". It feels like user posted image.

Now all she needs to do is complete the achievement test, send it in, and in 4 weeks we will have all of her books!!!

It finally came! The box that had the books, I mean! biggrin.gif

We went with Christian Liberty because they were able to customize to what we wanted and needed. I have to say that they lived up to their reputation. They allowed dd to skip to Geometry, which we are doing on our own. Their 9th grade level is normally Alg 1/2 or Alg 1 in Saxon & she has completed Alg 2. They will only require her to take 2 more math credits. No problem, she wants to take Advanced Math & Calculus before she graduates.

Then on her Science, they are allowing her to substitute Apologia for their curriculum. This is awesome, because she loves Apologia so much! I can't wait! It took all my will power not to toss my schedule for today and work on lesson plans. rolleyes.gif But wait, what am I doing on here? laugh.gif

They included all the test forms and teacher manuals that they prepare. They do make it easier. DD is so excited to be in high school. We are taking a trip to central Indiana to visit my alma mater and a couple other schools next week. IU, Butler, and IUPUI. I don't know who is more excited about this next stage of her life. laugh.gif

I didn't get a chance to visit the Christian Liberty booth. It sounds neat.
I just got the Abeka workbooks I ordered for my 3rd grader today banana.gif the handwriting book and the math drills. I really love the handwriting book it has dictionary skills and every state bird and even a little American history listed as writing lessons.

I still need to order stuff omg2.gif to finish up.

I bought the Apologia biology for my 9th grader on ebay today. I had to buy the 1st edition because that is the one our co-op is using. She is really excited about that class because she gets to dissect things sick.gif
My ninth grader is signed up and already in one of the virtual school classes. We are rethinking taking 4 online classes. I might switch her Algebra to Making Math Meaningful. The online class sounds like a pain ~ you have to show your work with these crazy symbols like writing our square root and exponent and using parenthesis for fractions sounds really complicated when you could just write down the work.

We are doing this independently. Do you have to get your own microscope since you are going through a co-op? I looked at some at the convention, but badday.gif and stunned.gif . I know I'll need to get them & the dissection kits, but I think I'll wait a couple months before I order.

I don't have to order microscopes because they have them at the co-op.

Which plan did you choose with Christian Liberty the one where they grade and keep transcripts or the home plan?

Because she is like me be nature, a worrier, I signed her up for the Administrative Plan. She wants the report card from someone OTHER than her mom. She also loves the idea that she can go through commencement at the school when time comes. We are located in S IN & once we move will be SE MI, not too far from Arlington Heights.

Oh, I forgot that everyone had asked about the Achievement Test results. They didn't give me the results, but they did place her where she needs to be. They also agreed to her placement in math (Geometry). So I'm guessing she did alright.

Congrats on the good test score er um placement laugh.gif

I'm really rolling around the idea of how much we want to be under an umbrella school or how much I want to do our own thing?? dunno.gif

Mine stresses over a heavy work load. She would rather have more time to do her hobbies art, web design and music. We will have 4 class graded by someone other than mom but I'm still making the transcript badday.gif
