Hi all,

My oldest is just not responding well to his current work load. I've decided to try something else.

Read for 1/2 hour every day, and a full page journal every day. We also have one outside activity each day, covering 3 'subjects'-- THEN SPLIT UP THE BASICS, and do one SUBJECT per day:

Monday: Spelling
Tuesday: Grammar
Wednesday: Mathematics (needs the most time)
Thursday: History
Friday: Free/Critical thinking/unfinished assignments.

Weekend science experiment won't change.

So he does five spelling sets on Monday, and is finished for the week, OR he has to finish them on Friday... and so forth.

Friday is reserved for games like Set, Othello, chess, or logic puzzles, etc.

Does anyone want to comment?

I think your change sounds good... infact I too am thinking of changing some things. DD seems to be getting tired of our "usual" work load. The way you set up your days sounds good. I actually might try it your way and see how she likes it.
Thanks for sharing! smile.gif

Well, my oldest loves it. it's 11 am, he's stopped to eat breakfast, help his brother find his spelling book, and he's playing game boy. DONE with 10 pages of grammar, DONE with half an hour of reading, DONE with his full-page journal...

His brother's not quite so happy.

The last few weeks have been soooo busy. I haven't had time to think much about school schedule & now we need to get going again?? help2.gif . I know some things need to change, so I think I'll take a few extra "teacher planning days" next week to work on the 2nd half of the year. Hopefully after a restful weekend I'll be more motivated!!

Dh & I have decided to try and get more organized this part of the year. I like Genna's idea of splitting up the main subjects. DS is in first grade but I think I can apply the same ideas. Today is my day to start. I got a little late but that's ok, DH & DS are both in bed still. So once I'm done here, I'm gonna start making a basic schedule. help2.gif

I did this with my daughter last year and it worked great! I allowed her to choose which subject she wanted to do each day but she had to complete the whole weeks worth or all assignments by Friday. I thought it would make her feel as if she had more say so in her schooling and at the same time I achieved my goal in complete assignments every week. We did not do that this year and I have noticed a big difference in getting her to complete assignments everyday. Think we are going to change back.

I have not yet master minded our "new schedule." There has been so much going on in this last week and a half that I hardly have time to think at all.
While DH is gone for his training over the next 3 weeks ( sweatdrop.gif ) I will sit and make it. I will be able to have the time to clear my mind and think only about school.

Could you all share your schedules? I'm needing to do something different too...but don't know what exactly. Maybe seeing what you are all doing will give me some ideas.
Thanks

My 14yo cousin is living with us now as of Dec 03. She's in 8th grade but tested at a 3rd grade level (and only barely) just before Christmas. She wants to do homeschool to catch up and feels that school is too distracting to really learn in. Like we didn't know that already! She wants to be ready for high school by August and since we have 6 grades to do is less than 8 months we have a pretty hefty schedule.

8am - get up, get showered, get dressed, eat breakfast, make breakfast for my 5yo
9am - 2 hours of Math (she wanted to get it done and over with) - she starts with basic drill sheets (THANK YOU, Donna!) biggrin.gif
11am - break - playstation/computer/internet/free reading
12pm - lunch, take 5yo to bus stop
1pm - 1 hour of Phonics
2pm - 1 hour of "english" (spelling, grammar, literature, etc)
3pm - 1 hour of science
4pm - 1.5 hours of social studies (this time period also includes 1/2 hour picking 5yo up from bus stop, playing on the way home, and general fooling around that they seem to do everyday)
5:30pm - PE (usually consisting of running around outside like lunatics and playing in the snow) / art / music (she does flute) / free reading
6pm - once she's done doing that stuff (usually only about a half-hour or so) we start dinner together. She loves to cook and last night made her first meal ABH (all by herself) - it was stuffed peppers. Since we're doing "cooking" during that hour we count it as "Home Ec".
7pm - dinner / TV (we all usually eat in the living room in front of the talking box rolleyes.gif )
8pm - DH will usually discuss some additional subjects with her.
9pm - wash face, brush teeth, pajamas, free reading or TV
10pm - bedtime

We actually are a little more flexible, but that gave us a basic schedule. It also gives her motivation with that break in the middle, the "Home Ec", and all the bus stop stuff.

I always make her correct her Math and Phonics/Grammar homework, the rest I don't really stress on it as we have so much to do and there's so much to cover, I figure she'll pick up the rest over time, if she needs it. I try to throw in TV/movies/cartoons (right now she's doing School House Rocks because I have to rearrange the office) / games / computer "edu-fun" games / etc.

She likes to stay up late, but she learned pretty quickly (we started 2 Jan 04) that she's too cranky and tired the next day to really learn anything.

Hi,

I am new here, but hope to be able to give and recieve good information and advice. I wanted to share that by mid year last year we were suffering terrible burnout, after 7 years of homeschooling. We all were really having a hard time. I prayed about it a lot and found out that our local library was giving some home school seminars. I attended them and started getting excited agian and got some good information that made the wheels start turning in my worn out brain. Then I attended a meeting of our home school group and there was a guest speaker who was doing exactly what I was thinking about doing. So mid year we changed and it has been GREAT clap.gif !!

We have been working this way for a year now and we all love it. My son and Daughter each have a checklist of what work they need to do daily. We do a lot of world history and also have activity days and filed trips with two other families that are using the same history that we use. Each day we do every subject, are usually done in three hours, sometimes more if we are really excited. Friday is catch up day...the motivation here is if you get all your work done...including housework...you get Friday free!! Also, they earn check marks, if the are able to get 140 checks in a 4 week period they get a "prize" wohoo.gif

That is my input,

Hope it is useful to someone smile.gif

I notice my children get more done when given a list they can check off as they go. I guess they can see the end of the rainbow in this way. I like your Friday off incentive. Thanks.
