we are going to be starting 3rd grade also. i think that i am going to try lifepac. i have never used it before, or there is this other curiculum i want to use also but i am leaning more towards lifepac. i also want to start a nature journal and we are doing a year long project of making a family tree and sending to the people that are still with us birthday and holiday cards that are homemade. we wanted to do a garden but we are short on cash this year so hopefully next year. we also want to try to make a bird feeder/bath. we don't know what else yet. probably whatever else pops up that interests us. but that is usually the way that it is with us.

[FONT=Impact][COLOR=blue] We are starting 3rd grade also and I can't believe it. This will be our 3rd year and I'm still clueless wreck.gif. We will be doing the same curriculum as we have been using. We follow TWTM and use SOTW, Spelling Workout, MCP Plaid Phonics, Living Learning Books Science, R & S English, Saxon, Latins Not So Tough, Rosetta Stone, Karate for PE, About com for Geography, and Discovering Great Artist for Art History. Through all that I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing.
I still have questions like how long do you teach subjects like spelling and phonics. Should I give standard tests to my kids or not. If so which tests? dunno.gif Right now we are in the grammer stage but when we get to the logic stage I am going to be really lost. I never learned like this, in sequence or in a way that made sense. I didn't have a love for learning so I remember very little and don't want it to be that way for my kids. help2.gif Even though I have meet allot of people who homeschool and some that do it the way I do I still feel like I am alone and no one understands. cry.gif Ok so now that I have probably depressed everyone sorry.gif I will get off my rantoff.gif . Thanks for listening.

hugs.gif The reason we homeschool is so we can do what is best for our children's individual needs. So it shouldn't look exactly like everyone else.

What is TWTM and SOTW? Sounds like you have a lot of curriculum.
If you do a search on schedules there are several ladies who share how long the do each subject. Donna has sample schedules for certain subject on her website too. I don't have a timed schedule really but I have an expectation...sort of a loose course of study. For my 3rd grader, ie. Math 4 X week, 3 workbook pages and a drill sheet or if big teaching lesson from teacher's book then 1 workbook page and practice on white board or with manipulatives.

I just have targets we usually hit around 90 percent of what we have planned. Somedays are better than others but after a bad day we just keep on trucking. I'm always surprised how far little by little takes you and what we accomplish by the end of the year banana.gif

This sounds so cool. What a wonderful way to connect your family.

Ooh - Could you tell me about Vocabulary Cartoons? We're finishing up 3rd grade this year though, so I'd love to know what age range it covered, etc. My dd just loves anything comics and cartoons, so it sparked my interest. Thanks!

My son is just finishing up 3rd grade and we're using The Well-Trained Mind (TWTM) as well. He just completed the third book of Latin's Not So Tough. What are your feelings about the program? Is your child doing well with it? I can't tell if I like it or not. Ds does; Latin is his favorite subject. I'm wishing we had used a different program simply because my mind isn't grasping the method they are using.

We're also using The Story of the World (SOTW), but only as a fun, "lite" supplement to history. We just started TWTM this year (our third of homeschooling) so I started both the kids on the Ancients. Is it working out for you?

Vocabulary Cartoons looks great! I might have to see if I can find that for my Ds. I think he would enjoy (as much as one can enjoy schoolwork stunned.gif ) that program.

Thanks for posting the example from your book Lisa.

We are starting 3rd grade this year, and so far the only program for sure we are going to use is Saxon Math. (actually going to do Math 2). The rest of the subjects I'm not sure yet. I usually print out The sunshine state standards for florida and use that as a guide line.

Hopefully this year we can be more organized, also we are going to start back up agian as soon as we move into the new house.

My dd#1 is going into second grade, but she will be doing third grade stuff.

Same here. So far this is what we have going:

SOTW - waiting for it to arrive. I just won it off ebay!! banana.gif

LLATL yellow - got it

Abeka math - waiting for it to arrive! Just won this too! clap.gif

Wordly Wise 3000 (I am pretty sure I want to use this, but I have not bought it yet.)

Science - ???? no idea what to use. We are thinking about just doing unit studies again.

Powerglide Spanish - buying soon

We also do journals (draftbook) 3x a week, as well as lots of history reading regarding American history. My girls are all American History lovers and so we spend lots of time discussing this. She is also taking piano and occasional drum from her daddy.

I am hoping to get my older two girls into dance or gymnastics, but we are still sharing a car and not sure when we want to get another one....(waiting to find out about Mallory's chest condition.)

This sounds crazy, but I am already excited about next year!

It does not sound crazy!!! We finished up with testing last week and I could see where my son needed to do a little more with what subject so to speak, so we will spend a little more time wiht that stuff and then move right onto 3rd grade. We are still using mostly the same stuff... SOTW.. Singapore math and some of there english.. HWOT--starting to learn cursive.... Science is as it comes and it interests us right now but I am planning on getting some more stuff from Sonlight for that as well. I think when we are done with our first SOTW book I am going to look into doing some American History as my son has been asking some questions. Then I have to more incorporate my 4 year old into some formal stuff. We are trying to learn our letters and numbers right now. Boy am I glad we are schooling year round!!! Ofcourse, I am still praying that my ex ( one ds father-8 year old) is not going to give me a hard time again about homeschooling... he has dropped it for now anyways pray.gif

I'm feeling good about next year too banana.gif

I need to update my original plans because I have really changed what I'm doing whistling.gif

I just bought LLatl the teachers book at a used book sale and will be using that too.
I just need to order the workbook. I'm still trying to decide about WW3000 dunno.gif

I switched my math to Making Math Meaning full and I bought the American Teachers guide at the same used book sale for the Abeka 3rd grade American Heros History I picked up awhile ago at a used book store. However, I don't know if it is realistic to do American History and World Geography with the co-op...
I get a little too ambitious for what I can really do sometimes whistling.gif

For art I really like Atelier. It's rather expensive but because we only do art once a week, sometimes less, the program last a long time. We aren't finished with the first level we bought and we've been using it a year, I have at least half a year left, if not more. If your kids are close in age, it's more cost efficient because they can share a level. It's a video based art program.... our art got MUCH better when we started this approach.

Donn'a Homeschool Convention Battle Plan

Curriculum Plan

I LOVED these two forums for the convention.... helped me focus and keep my info in an area that was easy to organize and use. I actually had a lady at the convention tell me I was WAY to organized to be there! Thank you Donna!
I shared them with a friend and they helped her to stay focused as well and not get overwhelmed!

Michele,

Just curious....why did you think you shouldn't have bought R&S spelling?

When I went to our hs'g conference, I just was going to buy their grammar. But, when I got there and really looked at what they had, I was pretty impressed and it was less expensive.

I am using the spelling, grammar, handwriting and phonics.

For phonics in all of my previous years, I used Primary Phonics, EPS and Explode the Code. I think R&S phonics is pretty similar, but more intense and really fill a page. I was pretty impressed by them.

She finished the Primary Phonics series, so I was just going to continue the ETC. But after seeing the R&S, I thought I would give it a go. It was great looking.
