Is any one using Math-u-See this year? Do you/ children like it? I am interested in the Primer, Alpha, and possibly Beta levels.
DD is 6 and working 2nd grade math workbooks I am not sure where I should try to place her. DS would be using Primer.
Thank you
Maria

We have been using MUS for a couple of years. But, we've been using the Classic version...older books that spanned a couple of "grades". We have used Foundations, Intermediate and Advanced. My 2 that are using MUS, do not care for the program much. We have struggled with a few topics not being explained very well and having to look to other sources (usually Saxon) for explanations. I think we are going to move into Singapore Math as soon as we finish our MUS books, after our Christmas Break.

I have my Dd (6) using Miquon and Singapore. She is loving math. I tried her in the MUS Foundations and we struggled every day. Not worth the constant battle to me so we switched programs.

Well, that's my twocents.gif ....hope it is worth that much smile.gif

We have used the MUS for several years. I found that there was not a lot of practice sheets, and did not cover material long enough. I had to go else where for extra work. I used the classic version and then this past summer bought the new version of Alpha (first grade??) and Epsilon. The Epsilon has nothing but fractions in it, which is fine if that is all you needed to learn, but ds needed lots of work on his multiplications and division. Dd was doing the Alpha and was very bored with it. We switced over to Rod & Staff, which is a more traditional textbook and we like it a lot. We will be selling off our MUS and sticking with Rod and Staff happy.gif .

If you have trouble placing your daughter in math, the MUS site has a placement test, so does Saxon. Don't know about Miquon and Singapore.

Nancy our Queen, is using MUS for one of her kiddos and I don't know what she is using for the others. Saxon I think. She might be able to help you more happy.gif .

HTH,
Thank you for such a quick reply. I have requested the demo from MUS, he said they have added more practice sheets to the new program. I think we would be using Alpha or Beta for DD too. She usually doesn't like Math, but has started to the last week or so. We have just been using Workbooks bought at Wal-mart and worksheets printed off of the internet. I wasn't worried about a Math curriculum since she was so young (6 1/2 right now) and already working 2nd grade workbooks clap.gif When we were watching the demo for MUS she really liked what was explained and how. And I thought I would still supplement with worksheets from the internet. Do you know who I might be able to contact about recieving a sample from Rod and Staff? blush.gif
Thank you agian for your response.

Beth S,
Thank you for your quick response also.
Your DD is the same age as mine biggrin.gif So it might be safe to think they would like the same things dunno.gif My DD was using workdbooks from Wal-mart and off the internet. Some are very colorful others aren't the ones that weren't I would let her use a marker or something colorful. She is a little artist and needs color. She really loved the idea of the blocks too.
We have pattern blocks and tanagrams and when she needs to use those she really likes math. I thought when we watched the demo dvd that it would be wonderful for her because of the blocks being needed on a regular bases. Ds learns much the same way as DD.
Do you have a website or number where I might be able to get more information about Singapore and Miquon?
Thank you,

Maria[COLOR=blue][SIZE=7]

Hi Appliejuice,
Thank you for responding so quickly agian. Them not having a website would explain why I can't find a website cry.gif . I called and requested some samples, the repersentative was very nice.
We also went to Mathusee.com and printed the Alpha placement test. DD was very bored with it but loved the blocks sucking up noise (9 becoming 10 by sucking up one) I am going back to print the Beta placement (2nd grade) which is the level she is working in right now and see if that helps any might as well do Gamma (3rd) while I am downloading biggrin.gif
We will wait until we get the samples from Rod and Staff to make our final desion. thanx.gif
Thanks agian,
Maria

Nancy,
What learning style is your ds? Both my dd and dd are very hands on. Does your ds like MUS? Did you feel it was a complete program or did you supplement also.

My ds is very hands on but he learns logically also. He loves the manipluatives, I think, because he is a Lego maniac. laugh.gif He also likes to watch the lessons on the video. We use it as his complete curriculum.

My ds doesn't need all that so I have her on Saxon. Saxon also has manipluatives though and she enjoys those.

My son is not so much of a hands on type person. He enjoyed using the manipulatives once, then didn't care to use them again. If he had trouble understanding a new task, I would bring out the manipulatives. He would see it once and that was it. dunno.gif He does like Rod & Staff, it is not hands on.

Hi Maria!

I ordered my Miquon and Singapore from Sonlight.
Singapore also has a website...http://www.singaporemath.com/
There is a placement test on the Singapore site that you can print off.

My Dd liked the MUS blocks for about a week, then they became a frustration for her.

My other 2, don't like the blocks at all! They prefer to just do the pages and move on to the next thing. I have been surprised that they usually don't have too many problems or missed problems with their work. But I always wonder if they are really "getting it"!

The Singapore/Miquon combination has been really good for Kaytie. She began telling me she LIKES math now. I am very pleased that we don't have total frustration every time we get out our math!
