We need to add at least 2 electives per year for the next 3 years.
What are some electives that you children did (or you have planned to do) and how are you going to accomplish them? Are you going to use a community college, classes somewhere else near you (we are military and have a base with opportunities) or are you going to design something up yourself? If you do something yourself, let's say for Computer Basics or Home Ec, what are you using for guidelines to help you cover what's needed?? TIA! |

We're just beginning to get into this stuff. My daughter wants to take a photography class... she's not old enough to take classes in the CC yet, but I found a photography course online that's free. Ginger looked at it for me (she's a professional photographer) and told me it looked good.... so we're going to use it. Ginger lives close by to me, and has a darkroom in her house... which she offered to help with....plus I told her last week, I'd be emailing her my daughter's photos for evaluation service....what a dear friend!
We're actually counting this as a fine arts credit...at least that's what I am pitching it as, hopefully it will be accepted as one, however it also makes a great elective class. I'll link this class later....it's bookmarked on the computer upstairs, which is occupied at the moment. There are several nice home ec course.... I believe you can look in the elective archives to find past discussion on that. I'm looking at Alpha and Omega Lifepac classes for computer classes...honestly we don't like A&O but they are the only computer literacy programs I could find. I'm still looking though! Hewitt is also a great place to look at high school materials... their focus is on high school students. They have several elective choices and the syllabuses to complete them. Oh please do post the link for the photography class. I dabble with that a bit as a hobby and my daughter I've noticed seems to be picking up the same interest. I've wanted for several years now to go take the class at the community college but with homeschooling kids and a husband in the military not around as often as I'd like it's been hard to fit that in "just for fun".
I'm in the first year of high school with my oldest. I've gotten just through the basics done with him as I've been trying to straighten this out in my head (and on paper) as to what he should do, what he's interested in, etc.. Deciding what needs to be a Fine Arts credit and what to make an Elective - my head is spinning! He's very active in Boy Scouts. He's achieved LIFE Scout and is now working on Eagle. I know some of this should be able to be worked in but since I'm not active in the planning and teaching of it I'm not sure how to go about that. I was reading the archives this morning which is what prompted me to post and ask what other are doing or have done. Thanks for the other links! I'll check those out! |

Electives....hummm, we use things they are interested in and let them go for it. For PE we used their lessons in ice skating and for Sarah this is her 6th year in Israeli dance. She could teach it at this point.
They love art, drawing, crochet, their latest addiction, and whatever else they desire to learn. I look at it this way. Life is an elective... you either participate to the fullest or don't. TV is NOT an elective however it is a nonparticipation in life. As for noting I put it simply as Elective with a little star. Then at the bottom note what all they experienced that year. This would be only for Jr. Sr. Highschool. Ber |

Thanks for the info Barbra- Sue.
I'm going to take a look at that computer curriculum for DS. I know that A&O's 20% off sale ends tomorrow so if it is something that DS could do I might just order it for him. |

Older dd is learning Latin this year. Hmm... wonder if Cake Decorating counts? She did that this year for Heritage Girls. I bet I could count Adopt A Stream and Forestry from 4-H too.

We are going to do Art History/Appreciation, Music and not sure what else. I thought Health and Driver's Ed were electives, so if they are we are going to do those too. I am going to give my son Home Ec credit because he cleans, cooks and babysits! For P.E. my 14 yo skateboards and does water sports. My 10yo does skateboarding and fishing for P.E.
