After reading what Kelley said about loving algerbra,
that most of us are probably not math whizzes and even if we are...probably have not done past the basic, in awhile. Matt and I are finishing up percentages/decimals...I would not say that he flew threw them. He usually is quite good in math, but had some challenges. I just ordered Keys to...Percentages. They have a whole series w/ decimals, measuring, etc... I will use this as a supplement to Abeka 6. I was wondering, what are your math challenges? |

My main math challenge is my attitude. I can do it, but I'd really rather not.

I love math.
But something I always need review on before helping someone else with it, is logarithms. LOL. It's just not automatic. Everything else is... at least all of the basics. |

Well, I understand everything I have had to teach the girls so far, but that is bc they are in Pre-K, 3rd and 2nd grades!
Hw, trying to teach money to my girls has been hard for me. Morgan finally got it last year and now it is a breeze. Hw, Madison simply cannot seem to understand why we start counting by 25's then switch to 10's and then 5's and then 1's. Jesse has offered to help many times but we always forget or someone is too tired. It is frustrating, but I know she will learn how to count money. It WILL happen. |

I have been okay, which is 6th grade. I am reviewing, while we are doing...but I think by next year, I might have to review before hand. We have been working on percents and decimals. Oh joy! Graphing is next, that is fun! |

Right now 8th grade Math is ok, but then again DD is using Math U See and I love the program, I even get to learn with this program. Mr. Demme makes it seem so simple. I just hope trig and calculus (not that DD will do calculus,we'll see) as easy as decimals, percentages, and pre algebra.

I love algebra and trigonometry and calculus. I love finding area and volume. It's basic maths that throws me off!
I have to actually think about basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Yet if you add a few random letters into the equation I'm fine. (I still need to do working but I find it easier and more relaxing) I think it's because I leant to do maths in an entirely different way to my Dc and Dh. When Dd was still in ps I tried to show her how to do subtraction using big numbers were you have to trade.....her and Dh do this thing where they cross out numbers and it's just so messy and confusing. I used to borrow one from the top line and give it back to the bottom line....they think I'm nuts. ' Weirdest part is, Dh and I grew up in neighbouring towns and he's only a few years older than me. We went to highschool together. But he learnt basic math one way and I learnt an entirely different way. I can't figure his working out. It's full of crossed out numbers and added in ones. Guess I'm just a neat freak. So he teaches basic math. (I'll do the harder stuff, I had to re-teach him algebra....and this man of mine is an engineer? |

QUOTE(quiltinmommy @ Jan 16 2006, 10:33 PM) Oh yes. Austin is doing just fine. Thank goodness his math book is very good at teaching him math. I sure feel like I had to take algebra 3 times before I passed it- and then I think I only passed because the teachers (summer school) just wanted to get us out of there and would GIVE us the answers if we were not done with the work in ten minutes. I have an algebra-phobia I think. I never could get the idea that two letters could equal a number.... sheer insanity... I am already looking into WHO or WHAT can help him next year with math---- gives me the heebie-geebies just thinking about it! |

' I learned subtraction the way your husband did, but since we started homeschooling I learned how to do it your way (with a program called Math-It) and that is how I taught my kids to do it. In my opinion, it is a far easier (and neater!) way to subtract. I can't imagine why they didn't teach it to us that way from the beginning. I'm always fine with the concepts of algebra and trig, too, but I miss questions because of basic arithmetic. My trigonometry professor would get so frustrated with me. |

My math challenges involve proving theroems.
Basic math gets to me if JM doesn't pick it up quickly...it's like "but 7 minus 3 is the exact same as saying 3 from 7" I love math, love the mostly concrete way it is. I even like proofs, well the basic ones. The ones involving Linear Algebra and Numerical Analysis got really old. Guess you can say I love math that deals with actual numbers not the completely "alphabetical math" that you show for EVERY number that it works. |

I *LOVE* math too, I know this is soooo nerdy lol but I have started doing algebra problems lately just to have something to do! I am very mathmatical, always have been, everything is #'s to me, if I hear a phone #, I remember it by addition/subtraction/ or something like that (like 358.... 3+5=8 or whatever) any set of #'s I will remember like this. I will use something mathmatical to remember it. I always try to figure out my exact change when I go to the store before they ring it up, I add taxes and all that LOL Usually right too.
I think the reason a lot of ppl have problems with math is because they are scared to use it, we play a lot of math games here too, dice to 10,000 and dominos is what I mean and my brother was saying the other day he's getting better in adding lol. My older niece was having trouble in 8th grade math and I asked her if she knew easy addition first... she didnt.. it wasnt automatic to her so I told her to work on that first and have them all in memory... (ex.. to know what 8 + 7 was without counting.. to just know it instantly) and during the day we would practice, driving down the road I would say "What's 9 + 3" (or whatever #) and have her answer it as fast as she could. When she went back home (she lives like 4hrs away from here, she was up here for summer) she kept working with it and now has an A in math! Most if not all of math is based around the easy math so if there isnt a good grasp on the easy stuff the the hard stuff is going to be hard. Anyway, math lover here! lol Rachel |

I was doing all the calculus steps correctly and would have scored a perfect A, if I would have remember that 2+2=4 and not 2. I messed up my basic math so bad. I was so |
