I am working on a unit on library skills and found this great web site on teaching the Dewey Decimal System. Check it out!

Dewey Decimal Online

Also check out: Education World

It has some library skills lesson plans. I reworked them for our needs.

Have any of you done this before?

I haven't, but I remember Applie had a neat idea for a library scavenger hunt to reinforce what her kids had learnt about using the library. This was about a year and a half ago. It made me wish I had done it at the time.

Here is a link to a topic we had on this some time ago. library skills

I can't find applie's original post. I did print it out at the time for reference but finding it will be a bit of a chore right now. I may be able to share it with you later if I can find it and if there is anything in it that hasn't been mentioned in the other thread. smile.gif

I bookmarked both sites. They look really interesting. I am going to look over them more in the morning. But, what I seen, I really do like them. This could help me alot with the younger two. Thanks.

I'll have to check these out later. I still have not done a library study yet and I really want to. I take my kids there and sometimes think that it is obvious what they should do and I shouldn't have to teach them. lmfao.gif I know that is way wrong.

laugh.gif I'm the same way. It worked with my son (he seems to have picked up on the whole library skills thing by osmosis) but my daughter is still clueless and couldn't find a book if her life depended on it. I need to do something about that. She's only 7, but still.............

My kids spend so much time at the library, they just know where everything is. blush.gif They would probably say "Dewey who?" dunno.gif

They do know how to search for a book on the computer system & find it by the call numbers. They just don't know what the call numbers mean. And ok, I'm a terrible mom, but how important is it to know the Dewey Decimal system? I remember learning it in school and doing worksheets, but I never retained the information. If the dc are able to locate the material, do you think I should still be reviewing this with them?

I don't think it is the end of the world if they don't know it. But for us "educated people" omg2.gif I think it a cool thing to know about the library.

Now I can say that in fun, b'c I knew about the system, but didn't realize it was broken down into such detail. Not a clue! dunno.gif

That web site opened my eyes.

I am a huge lover of libraries, so I feel like now I know the scoop.

So I guess it doesn't matter....just makes you a bit more in the know! whistling.gif

Yep. We actually had the opportunity to help shelve the books in the Young Adults section of our new library prior to their opening! I know I'm a bit off, but it was a blast! I did learn that 921 is biography. That is burned in my memory forever! laugh.gif

My hubby would have had a blast. Everytime we walked into a library in college he was reading the shelves. He just loves the library and could probably tell you what every section of Dewey is. He was a page in the city library while in high school and he was a work study in our college library. Me, I love books, my own books.

I worked in my primary school library when ever I could, my friend and I had a blast! I wish I could work for a couple of hours a week during school hours (I have dance after that time) in the local library, but law says I can't work in those hours until 16, and they won't let me until 15. sad.gif
