Well, mostly excited anyway! I bought the oak meadow curric to use, and we've sort of wound up abandoning the actual curric.
I've discovered dorian (my 5 y/o) does fantastically with taking more of an unschool approach. So I am kind of bummed to be out tha tmoney, I have two other children I can potentially use that curric with. In the past two weeks of leaving him alone, and not pushing, we've been hanging out with Magic Schoolbus books and dvd's. Well, he's told me (days after) about meteors, the rain/water cycle, and the five senses. The other day he told my husband we should find a fan that runs on batteries in case the electricity goes out again (we were hit by Wilma), and went on to tell us what else wouldn't work because it needs electricity to run and tried to come up with alternatives. I am still using our Mr Wizard words (a word a week posted and whenever he sees it or hears it he tells me) to help with sight recognition or words, but I've stopped focusing/wanting to focus on drilling letters, their sounds and whatnot into him. I am at odds with that, but I am pretty sure that when he's ready, it will just click, and before then it's a moot point to push. I did pick up a number dot to dot and lower case letters books of activity pages because he is always asking what numbers look like (he knows, but he forgets he knows) and having some premade activity pages will give me a break in the day as well. I have been defending that we often spend a chunk of the day doing nothing at all, but then for a good 30 or more minutes he'll be so into something, that I can stretch it out for longer. The other day we watched Go Diego Go (I know, alot of you don't feel TV has any good, I'm not here to debate it either way, I feel it does some good for some things) and we made a penguin after and looked up penguins, and the next morning he told me that his penguin needs a yellow beard so it would be an emporor penguin, and proceeded to make it so. So my dreams of having a disciplined, hard working kid aren't happening, but something even better is. I have a kid who is interested in such a wide variety of things, it keeps everyday interesting. We're going to the King Tut exhibit in about a month, and I can't wait to see what he takes away from that! |

QUOTE(azxure @ Dec 17 2005, 07:02 PM) I really love the curriculum, it's just not what my oldest needs, so I am hoping one of my other kids will be able to use, sorry! OH!!! That's quite alright--- I misunderstood and thought the other kids were too old for the curriculum that wasn't working for the youngest. It is a good curriculum--- and I am thinking that I want to check into their online program for next year since DS will be in high school work- and I am already overwhelmed at JUST the thought of it! I plan to buy it for the youngest when he is ready--- so it's no biggie- I just offered in case you were feeling "stuck- with nothing to do with it!" I know I have felt that way over some stuff I used in the past- it can be frustrating when you think of the cost and it all going to waste! Brightest Blessings! |
