My daughter will be bringing her text book home from christian school. We will use that this year for spelling. It is Abeka for 7th grade spelling. Do you think I will need to buy the teachers book, quiz key and quizzes??? Thanks.

I use A Beka spelling for my son also. I do not use the curriculum guides. I do use the teacher edition.

I make up our own tests and print them from the computer.

Hope that helps.

We also use ABeka and I use the teacher edition. I like the sentence bank in the teacher's edition plus the useful study helps.

You can definitely do without it but it is helpful in my opinion.

I use straight Abeka, and have never used the teacher edition for spelling.

I have my kids copy the words 2x's every day, then on Fridays they get a spelling test right from the list.

Do you test your child on all the words? For 5th grade there is 35 words, 10 of which is vocabulary.

Yes, all the words. For 5th grade, I would give them an opt out quiz on Monday's....You have the student book, call out the vocab word, and have them write what they think it means. If they get it correct, then they don't have to copy it or test on it(I put little stars by the ones that they miss, so that THEY know which ones they have to copy, and so "I" know which ones to test on.

I do our tests a bit different.

I do not test on the vocabulary words. I use those throughout the week and drill him at various times thorughout the day.

You could also check Donna's scheduling for the Natural Speller. It's a different program, but it gives suggestions for spelling activities to use through the week.

This is what we do for 7th grade,
Monday- write words 3x
Tuesday- Change words to root and add all prefixes/suffixes possible (we work from a list of prefixes/suffixes she should be familiar with and their meanings
Wednesday- write synonyms (thesaraus work)
Thursday- Look up the etymology (history) of all the words
Friday- Test

Thank you very much for your responses. I split the list into half and am taking two weeks to complete a test. I was just curious to see if anyone else was doing the same. They are much harder this year in my opinion.

I don't use Abeka but I do like your idea. This would cause them to learn more than just how to spell the words. yes.gif
