We have hit a brick wall with large division problems. Two digit divisiors are difficult for the boy, but he does work through them with much agony. Now we are onto three digit divisiors. Yesterday he was in tears about it. We have another couple of lessons on this before we move on to something else. Does anyone have any suggestions on a different way to teach this?

Example of what we are doing:

266,178 divide by 491

We are rounding the 491 to 500 to estimate how much 491 will go into 2661. Once you figure out how many goes in there (5), you multiply 5 x 491 to get the amount to subtract from 2661. And so on down the problem.

Any suggestions? We are using Rod and Staff. I am looking for a creative way to explain this. smile.gif

Thanks!

Well, ya'll are just a bunch of help. whistling.gif

laugh.gif Just kidding.

The boy did his work today, but I have checked it yet. I did tell him that he had two more lessons on this and then we could move on. The sooner he got it done, the sooner he could move on. That really doesn't work on the kids. What did help, was that fact that he couldn't go out and play with a friend until his work was done. biggrin.gif

My youngest dd is having a problem with the 'what do next' stuff in math too. She understood everything up until this point with no problem. She just isn't getting the 'next step' part.

Now, my oldest... she is getting it! She flys through pre-algebra problems like a hot knife through butter... but she didn't get the earlier stuff. user posted image

What I'm doing is just making them stay where they are and do the same type problems over and over and over until they get it. They hate me for it... and start whining that if they were in public school they could just move onto something else. rolleyes.gif

That's when I start dialing on the phone to the school board to ask how to enroll them... they quickly shut up! blush.gif

Long division is not my strongest point. I just round to the nearest whole number that is what is easiest for me. But, I think that you said that you already tried that. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. But, I do hope that he gets it.

I happened upon this site. The method is acclaimed by some and disliked by others, but I can see where it might be helpful, especially in the beginning. I think it could be used to make kids more comfortable with multi-digit division. Students could gradually be weaned from the method as they become more comfortable with long division problems.

double division

Yes, we are doing that. Have you gotten to double/divide yet? That is cool, but more difficult than casting out nines. biggrin.gif

laugh.gif Actually, I think it is rather cool. I never knew you could do that. I am learning so much with the math stuff, that I am sad I wasn't taught this in school myself.

Knowing R&S, there will be future opportunities to practice long & boring division.. laugh.gif I'd work through it with him to make sure he understands the process and then go on. Maybe work in some review problems every now and then. ??? Not very creative advice...but it's all I've got. dunno.gif

Me too. But it seems as if those are the very long and difficult problems.

Did you notice that too?
