This is my first year homeschooling.. I am homeschooling my son who is in kindergarten. My only concern is that I am doing too much with him, curriculum wise. We are learning 4 new letters a week and 2 numbers a week.. He is doing very well, not getting frustrated , seems to be enjoying himself.. I honestly do not think he even knows that he is learning.. So I guess what I am trying to say is am I pushing him too hard or just go with the flow....
here is our daily routine: 830-845 storytime 845-930 is math (flashcard game, writing numbers n math worksheets) 930-10 writing numbers 10-1030 is snack n play time 1030 -11ish is phonics n reading ( worksheets, reciting alphabet) 11ish - 1145 is bible study on 2 days a week 1145 to noonish is science 2 days a week for the rest of the day is usually cleaning around house.. maybe so some errands n I try to hit the park w/him.. then 2 days aweek we do an art project.. n generally on fridays is our review day.. am I over doing it??? thank you all for your imput... |

I think as long as he is enjoying it, you're probably not. I will say that last year we did kindergarten and we did not spend as much time as you are, although we pretty much did what is on your list. But every kid is different, so I would say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If he suddenly loses the joy of learning, that would be a sign you need to re-evaluate. But what you are doing is probably just right for him. Is he your only child? He might really like that one-on-one time you are spending with him, so that's perfect. You are getting quality AND quanitity! |

I agree with Keri. If he is enjoying it and does not seem frustrated, keep going. Hw, if it becomes too much for either one of you, I would definitely slack off some. Sounds like you are doing a great job!!!

Your child's mood is a great guage of if it is too much or too little time...
Sounds like it is going well! I know I did too much with my oldest at first... he does better with a more hands off approach (TOTALLY hands off... he taught himself to read! LOL!) Good luck! Tabitha |

I don't have anything original to add, but I do agree with the others. If your little guy is learning AND happy, then you must be on the right track!

I agree, if you are happy and your little one is happy go ahead and enjoy homeschooling as is.

Whatever works for you and your son! Don't worry, he'll definitely let you know if it is too much for him.

Sounds like he's ready for that to me. Especially if it's fun. You are probably right about him not knowing it's school. For us Kinder is usually 2-3 hrs long. Play time does consist of games and other things to reinforce what they've learned. The 2 hrs is mostly for learning that they must sit and cooperate with teacher. You never know when they may have to attend public school or even just sitting in church. We do as much as we can on the couch or on our bellies on the floor.

I have a boy doing Kindergarten and one doing 1st grade. My comment has to do with age, you didn't mention how old he is. My kindergartener is 4 so we don't do that much. His schedule is to do one letter a week. We do a minibook of the letter, a color sheet, we do links to the letter in math, science, and so forth, and on the last day we review all the letters and beginning sounds etc. For math we do a number a week and of course the linking with his letter. He also likes to sit in on his brothers science, nature, and religious studies. Total study time each day not counting the sitting in, around 30 min.
My first grader is 6 and he does a bit more. He is mostly finishing up first and headed into second. Since his phonics program is fairly aggressive he is doing some second grade, Spectrum. He does handwriting, Grammar, phonics, Math MCP he is around 1/2 done there too. He reads his nature reader, misc books around the house, Am History coop, then Ethics/Jewish studies, and lastly science. Most of these are weekly not daily, the only daily ones are religious studies, phonics and math. Total study time 1 to 1.5 hrs each day. Okay, so a lot of what you do in any of the early grades depends on the age of the child. What a 4 year old kindergartener can do is not the same as what a 5 or 6 year old kindergartener can do. Children are ready for sit down learning at different times. If what you are doing works go for it but watch for the signs of overload, perfection, anxiety, fear of failure, etc. Ha, I still watch for these in my teens. Ber |
